Looking for a nearby neighborhood with extra holiday spirit? Check out Nextdoor’s annual Cheer Map.
As of December 1, Nextdoor’s annual Cheer Map is back to help neighborhoods shine even brighter this season. In partnership with Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas, neighbors can turn to the Cheer Map to share plans to decorate their homes and find which nearby neighborhoods have the most holiday spirit. All of this is according to Nextdoor’s blog.
How does it work?
The Cheer Map is available nationwide on the free Nextdoor app or on nextdoor.com/cheer_map. If you don’t already have an account you can create one for free. It’s all voluntary from there.
You can choose to mark whether or not your home will be decorated with lights or displays for the holidays. If it is, then a ‘lights and display’ icon will appear over your home’s location on the map. From there you can check out which of your neighbors are also decorating their home.
Here’s how to put your house on the Cheer Map:
- Visit your neighborhood map by tapping on the Cheer Map icon in the upper right corner of your Nextdoor homepage.
- A pop-up window should appear over your address on the map, asking “Will you be decorating your home for the holidays?” (If the window doesn’t appear, click on your address.) Select ‘I will!‘, or ‘Not this year‘, then click Continue.
- If you’ve selected ‘I will!’, a ‘Lights and displays’ icon will be placed on your house on the map.
To remove your house, simply visit the Cheer Map again and click the ‘lights and display’ icon over your house. Change your selection to ‘Not this year‘ then hit continue.
And with many people staying home this year due to the pandemic, the Cheer Map is providing a safe, contact-free way to see some festive sights.
This year, the pandemic has prompted many neighbors to decorate earlier than usual. A Nextdoor poll of over 120,000 neighbors across the country showed that 70% put up holiday decorations in November, and 22% were decked out before Thanksgiving, according to the Nextdoor Blog.
Cheer Map will be happening through December. Find your neighborhood Cheer Map here.
