Step Back in Time at Payne’s Soda Fountain

A 1950s era diner with 150 years of history!

A staple in downtown Scottsboro, Payne’s Soda Fountain is one of the oldest businesses in Alabama and one of the few authentic soda shops still standing.

Originally called Payne’s Drug Store, William Henry Payne opened it after returning from the Civil War in 1869. Now, the mother-daughter duo of Lisa Garrett and Jessica Walton run the soda shop, serving up new takes on old classics and trying to foster new memories of Payne’s for future generations.

So grab yourself a classic red slaw dog and wash it down with a peanut Coke. And make sure you save some room for a hand dipped sundae or milkshake.

And if you’ve never been, do yourself a favor and take the trip to Scottsboro to see for yourself why this place is still special after 150 years.
