The popular Rodgers & Hammerstein musical The King and I will be performed live at the Von Braun Center with five shows from Friday, February 8th, to Sunday, February 10th. The King and I is loosely based on the true story of Anna Leonowens, a British woman who was hired by the King of Siam to be the governess for his children in the early 1860s. The tale had been adapted for stage and screen before, but in 1951 Rodgers & Hammerstein added music, cast Yul Brynner as the King of Siam, and created Broadway magic. Since then, people at the most prestigious theaters all the way down to audiences of high school drama clubs have heard “Shall We Dance”, “I Whistle a Happy Tune”, and “Getting to Know You” sung from the stage.
The touring company bringing The King and I to Huntsville, featuring a cast and orchestra of nearly 50 people, has been receiving rave reviews. Star Tribune said, “’King and I’ reminds us why musicals exist.” And Providence Journal wrote, “Nothing is less than outstanding – not one second.” Whether you’ve never seen The King and I before or if you can quote every line, you are sure to enjoy this show.
